Tired of the same old meals? We found some ways to add delicious twists to family favourites, such as Chilli Con Carne, Spaghetti Bolognese, Fish and Chips and the Sunday Roast. Did you know that one in four British people can only cook six recipes? According to research commissioned by recipe box service Hello Fresh in 2018, while we enjoy cooking from scratch most evenings, many home cooks fall into a rut of cooking the same recipes over and over.

There’s a number of reasons why we do this - we know our families will enjoy them, we don’t want to waste money and ingredients on something which we may not like and sometimes we just want to seek comfort in something we know we can whip up quickly. But it’s easy to find yourself getting bored of cooking the same things again and again.

If you’re looking for ways to liven up a family favourite, why not try giving it a tasty twist? We’ve looked at some of the UK’s most loved dishes and found ways you can liven up mealtime. It may be the same meals we know and love, but they’re certainly not boring!,

Chilli Con Carne

You can’t beat a good chilli con carne, particularly on a cold winter’s night. But have you ever thought of combining it with macaroni and cheese? The Kitchn’s recipe for One Pot ‘Chili Mac’ makes the perfect weeknight meal and can be made in one large casserole dish on the hob.

If you’re looking for a meat-free option, try Delicious Magazine’s White Chilli which combines Mexican beer, butter and cannellini beans with jalapeño and dried chillies. All you need is a squeeze of lime - and plenty of tortilla chips to scoop it up with!

Spaghetti Bolognese

‘Spag Bol’ is always a winner because it’s so easy to make. We love the look of Nigella Lawson’s Slow Cooker Lamb and Pasta, where macaroni is combined with a delicious slow simmered lamb mince bolognese. A definite winner with children, teenagers and adults like!

Jamie Oliver’s Mushroom & Lentil Bolognese is packed full of veggies and uses puy lentils and chopped up mushrooms in place of mince. You can even make it vegan by subbing the parmesan cheese for a sprinkle nutritional yeast.,

Fish and Chips

If you’ve been missing your Friday night Fish and Chips during lockdown, don’t despair! This traditional - and much loved - dish is really easy to make at home. If you’re looking to add an even tastier twist to this British classic, try this recipe for Piri Piri Fish and Chips which even comes with a delicious method to make spicy, minty peas.

Or you can forgo the fish entirely and try your hand at Beer Battered Halloumi and Chips. The beer makes the batter even more bubbly and light. If you’re looking for an alcohol free option, it can easily be subbed for ice cold sparkling water.

Roast Dinner

Sunday just isn’t Sunday without a roast. If your family’s getting fed up with the same meat and two veg, try spicing up your life (and your dinner.) Rukmini Iyer’s recipe for Slow-cooked Leg of Lamb with Harissa, Roasted Aubergines & Tomatoes uses one large roasting tin and is a great way to feed a crowd of hungry people.

Or, try making a Roast Chicken smothered in a garlic-lemon ‘kiev’ butter (just make sure you have plenty of roast potatoes on hand to mop up all of that delicious melted butter!) If pork is more your thing, try the Hairy Biker’s method of stuffing a boned joint full of herbs and spices, before rolling it up and roasting it with plenty of spuds.
