It's that time of year again when we all start thinking about the new year ahead and how we're going to resolve to improve our health, fitness and lifestyle. Some typical resolutions may include starting a diet, stopping smoking, giving up alcohol or joining a gym and, while we always start with good intentions, two or three months down the line, we've given up. For the wellbeing of yourself and your family, this article comes with some tips on how to make your resolutions a success. Let's start with a ten-step easy guide:

1) Be realistic

Think about what you can genuinely achieve within a set time period. If you're looking to lose weight and have 50 pounds to lose, focus on the first five, rather than the entire amount.

2) Plan ahead

Start thinking now about how you will fit the changes you want to make into your lifestyle and what changes you can realistically make. Can you really hit the gym five days a week? Start small and follow medical advice about what is safe for you.,

3) Plan for difficult times

How will you manage temptation? Think of what you can do when you are faced with moments of weakness. Do you have a friend you can call, or an activity that you can enjoy that won't affect your goal?

4) Stay motivated

Write a list of genuine reasons why you want to achieve this goal and a list of what may happen if you don't work towards it. This will be a good reminder for when you're thinking about giving up.,

5) Tell others about your goals

Having the right kind of support is great, so tell your friends and family or join a group where you can get the support you need.

6) Give yourself a reward

Set yourself mini-targets along the way and reward yourself with something that will support your resolution. For example, if you're losing weight, don't buy yourself a box of chocolates, instead how about a dress you love in a size smaller than what you wear now? This will set a target for you to work towards.,

7) Track the progress you make

Keeping an eye on the mini-targets you achieve will help keep you motivated and help you see how far you have come.

8) Accept small slips will happen

You're only human and the occasional slip is not going to ruin the whole plan. Just move past it and get back on track straight away.,

9) Don't give up

It takes around 28 days to form a new habit and around six months for it to become part of you, so just be patient and keep going.

10) Recommit

If you're finding your motivation waning after two months, then just commit to continuing for one more day. Then commit for the next day, then the next. It's easy to commit for just one more day.

You can have your healthiest year yet by making resolutions that will stick. Not only will you boost your health, fitness and wellbeing but you will inspire others to do the same.
